Joshua Sarfert, a model student, has been deeply involved with the R.J. Reynolds community throughout his four years here.
Sarfert was able to grasp many of RJR’s opportunities with involvement in the drama club, theater, Students Demand Action, in his role as the vice president of the Audubon Club, Pine Whispers media editor, and secretary of the film club. Sarfert also contributed many hours of volunteer work to Reading Revolution and various homeless shelters within the community. With such involvement, RJR has had a significant impact on Sarfert, and he will miss many aspects of his experience.
“I’ll miss the people here the most,” Sarfert said. “I know I’m gonna talk to them down the line, but still, not being here with everyone from 8 AM to 3:40 will be very different.”
Sarfert has also learned many life lessons while at RJR.
“There are a lot of different backgrounds at Reynolds,” Sarfert said. “So it teaches you that, at the end of the day, be yourself because there are so many different types of people here that you’ll always find your people.”
Sarfert plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall. He will continue in the media and journalism field following his role as Media Coordinator at Pine Whispers.
RJR’s newspaper made some of Sarfert’s favorite memories at school. The paper allowed him to meet new people, go to new places, attend different events, and put his stories in writing.
“I really liked going to the Executive Mansion in Raleigh with Olivia Stubbs to interview the first lady of North Carolina as part of the newspaper,” Sarfert said.
RJR will forever hold a special place in Sarfert’s heart with all the memories and friends he made throughout his four years.
