Each year, a new group of seniors comes and goes, leaving behind a lasting legacy carried forward by the underclassmen. Senior Olivia Bland is among those who are headed off to college next fall to pursue their passions and accomplish their dreams. Bland, as excited for her next chapter as one can be, is leaving behind a community of people on whom she has had a lasting impact and with whom she has made many lasting memories.

“Reynolds has been like a second home for me, and I’m really going to miss the community we have here,” Bland said.

Getting involved has never been a struggle for Bland; in fact, it comes easily. She has built her communities in numerous clubs and organizations, all while finding the time to play varsity field hockey each fall.

“I’ve been in SGSC [Senior Girls Service Club] since my sophomore year, and my favorite part is being able to participate in frequent community service opportunities and engaging with members from all different grades,” Bland said. “But my favorite commitment has been being the RJR yearbook Editor-in-Chief. I love getting to put the book together and incorporate every aspect of Reynolds into one place that people can look back on.”

Undoubtedly, Bland has made her mark on the people here at R.J. Reynolds, with underclassmen describing her as being like an “older sister” to them. Although high school can be filled with its fair share of stressful times and some low points, Bland has always kept a positive attitude.

“The most valuable lesson that high school has taught me is to always be present in the moment and not get caught up or overwhelmed by little mistakes or setbacks,” Bland said.

After four long years of hard work and a busy schedule, Bland has committed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to major in media and journalism.

“It took me a while to figure out which school was the right fit for me, but finally I decided on UNC, and it couldn’t be a more perfect place for me,” Bland said.

In just a few months, Bland will be embarking on a new chapter of life, and she couldn’t seem more excited.

“I’m really looking forward to experiencing new things and meeting new people as well as just seeing what this next stage of life has to offer,” Bland said.
