The weather is warming, anxious students are beginning their preparations for final exams, and seniors are ready to end the year and begin their next chapter. Among these seniors, Adrian York stands out. York has had an immense impact on the demon community throughout her high school years. She was a member of the Girls’ Council, JROTC, and Demon Service Team. In addition, York enjoyed spending her free time playing tennis for the R.J. Reynolds High School Tennis Team.
“They’ve all positively shaped my high school experience as they’ve allowed me to meet new people, be service-oriented, and play a sport I love,” York said.
Following graduation, York will attend Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. There, she will play Tennis and participate in Army ROTC. During her high school experience, York was influenced by her JROTC instructors, Major Whitekar and Sergeant Bethea.
“They’ve always pushed me out of my comfort zone, encouraged me to do my best, and have continuously shown me support in anything I do,” York said. “They teach you valuable life skills and want you to succeed.”
Throughout the year, there have certainly been many memorable events for the seniors, but one stood out the most to York: the homecoming dance.
“It was cool to see a lot of people come, as in previous years it was not as big of a deal, so it was nice to see the growth of it, and I enjoyed having fun with my friends,” York said.
As she prepares to begin her college tennis journey, York maintains a positive attitude. She understands the mental aspect of the sport and the most important part.
“Staying focused on the present point [is the most important],” York said. “Kind of like life, you have to stay present in the moment and not worry about the past or future.”
