On Saturday, September 13th, and during school on Friday, September 12th, five R.J. Reynolds alumni and former teachers were inducted into the Arts Hall of Fame, including Andrea Freeman, Bonnie Angelo, Ellen Denham, Eric Johnson, Matt Kendrick, Rioghnach Robinson, Robby Bach, and Roby Walls.

The ceremony, originally scheduled for January of last school year, was cancelled due to snow. RJR band teacher Amy Harlee and student volunteers on the planning committee faced the challenge of rescheduling the event.

“I was impressed by their commitment and professionalism,” Harlee said. “We had to contact everyone involved and the auditorium staff to come up with an alternative date. But honestly, I think it worked out even better.”

In addition to the speakers, RJR art students took the stage. Performances from the dance, band, and a capella classes honored the inductees and their contributions to the school community. A Capella performed the song “I Carry Your Heart” in honor of Bonnie Angelo, an inductee who passed away.

“I really appreciated the opportunity to show the inductees that the next generation of artists is working hard to build on Reynolds’ legacy,” RJR sophomore Rowan Baker said.

The week leading up to the ceremony, a few of the inductees came to speak during classes and the Friday school show. This gave students the opportunity to learn and take inspiration from people with stories like theirs who went on to have successful careers in music, writing, filmmaking, and much more.

“[The inductees] are always so excited about what the students are doing and want to come back again and stay connected to their alma mater,” Harlee said. “The events are so filled with love and appreciation for Reynolds, and it makes me so grateful to get to work here and offer all these opportunities to current students.”
