The National Honor Society is a nationwide organization that recognizes high school students who embody scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Every year, juniors and seniors of R.J. Reynolds High School are inducted and walk the stage to receive this prestigious honor. Membership in the National Honor Society is not just a recognition but a responsibility in which members are expected to continue their streak of community involvement and academic excellence.

Balancing clubs, merit, and community is an honorable task. The leaders of the RJR chapter highlighted this in their speeches before the official induction. They gave the first congratulations that the new members received as they prepared to walk the stage and gain their certificate. The walk begins with the seniors and follows with the juniors, who have displayed honorable qualities while at RJR. The induction is a night to celebrate them, their achievements, and what they will do in college and beyond.

There are hundreds of ways to demonstrate eligibility for the National Honor Society. Taking highly rigorous classes illustrates a student’s commitment to scholarship, such as the honors and Advanced Placement courses offered at RJR and the Career Center. Taking the lead in clubs, extracurriculars, and sports teams demonstrates leadership and a student’s problem-solving ability. The passion to help those in need demonstrates service, which takes form through volunteer work in soup kitchens, retirement homes, and even through clubs at RJR, such as the Ebony Society and Girls’ Council. Above all else, holding to yourself and demonstrating honesty, integrity, and good morals demonstrates having good character.

At this year’s National Honor Society induction, the RJR chapter celebrated the achievements of its members and looks forward to the future members. The National Honor Society not only honors individual excellence but also strengthens our school as it creates a community of integrity to which students aspire.
