R.J. Reynolds High School offers a variety of programs designed to help students gain experience, such as school clubs and community service events. However, these aren’t the only ways that RJR uplifts its community. Recently, the RJR Demon Pantry received a major upgrade.

The Demon Pantry, a program started by school staff to provide students with essential resources like food, clothes, and hygiene products. According to RJR’s Principal, Calvin Freeman, the Demon Pantry, which has been around for roughly ten years, initially came from humble beginnings.

“The idea came from folks who worked in student services recognizing the need that students were starting to show,” Freeman said. “… and that need continued to grow year after year.”

Keeping the pantry stocked has been a challenge, but the RJR community has stepped up to help, with parents, students, and local food banks all contributing.

“There is a commitment to make sure the Demon Pantry is stocked,” Freeman said. “The pantry is becoming fortified in terms of allowing us to sustain it over a period of time.”

Ten years later, the Demon Pantry is not only providing students with crucial resources, but it has expanded and grown as more people contribute with donations. It moved from its original spot in the Student Service office to a separate, dedicated area.

“Our Alumni group from the class of 1968 raised over $25,000 for us in order to turn one of our alcoves into our Demon Pantry,” Freeman said.

The Demon Pantry has allowed for students to access items they need but may not have on hand, a situation many have experienced.

“I needed something but I had to go to school early,” Junior Naosha Rousseau said. “I didn’t have it on me, but I was able to get it at school.”

Even with its growth, there is still more work to be done. The pantry needs the full support of the community, as donations are a constant necessity to keep it running smoothly. According to Mr. Freeman, the best way to spread the word is simply by word of mouth. By contributing to the Demon Pantry, you can help make RJR a place where everyone feels supported.
