    Every season begins with hope, but for the R.J. Reynolds High School men’s varsity soccer team, the first four games of the 2026-2027 season tested that harder than anyone expected. After opening with a strong 5-2 win over Mooresville, the team experienced a rough patch: a 4-0 loss to Providence, a 4-0 loss at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee, and a 1-0 loss at Hough. Despite starting 1-3, Head Coach Daniel Roach believes the team displays promise for the future.

    Despite the early setbacks, the team’s resilience and growth have stood out to Roach, who sees the opening stretch as a valuable learning experience. 

   “Based on the first 4 games, there have been many positives to take away regardless of the results,” Roach said. “Some positives in a team aspect, but also in individual players getting opportunities they might not have expected heading into the season.”

   Despite tough opponents and upsetting scores, Reynolds has seen players playing well and beginning to fit into the team.

    “During training, we will continue to train hard and focus on things we need to correct while trusting the overall process,” Roach said. “Our schedule doesn’t get easier, but we are learning how to respond to adversity now, rather than later.” 

    Injuries and early season adjustments have slowed Reynolds’ momentum, but Roach expects the team to settle in as the season progresses. 

    “No telling when we will come into form; I expect us to be in a much better position in terms of health and confidence come mid-to-late September,” Roach said.

    That timeline aligns with the Central Piedmont Conference schedule, giving the Demons a chance to peak when it matters most.

    This season also marks a shift for Roach on a personal level, as he is no longer teaching at Reynolds. However, this hasn’t affected his connection with the team.

    “Not much has changed,” Roach said. “I just don’t get to see or check on the guys during the day.”

    The Demons’ record may not reflect their potential, but the foundation is there: a strong opening win, flashes of individual growth, and a coach confident in the team’s long-term trajectory. With improved health, growing confidence, and lessons learned from a difficult early schedule, Reynolds believes the season is far from defined.
